Why a Concussion Affects Much More Than Just the Brain
For many years, a concussion was considered a relatively minor injury that simply required a few days of rest before life could return to normal. Modern research has dramatically changed that understanding. Today, scientists know that even a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), commonly known as a concussion, can affect nearly every major system in the body—from the cardiovascular and endocrine systems to sleep, digestion, immunity, and mental health.

Can Nutrition Support Recovery?
No food or supplement can “cure” a concussion.
However, growing evidence suggests that good nutrition may support the brain’s natural healing processes.
Researchers have investigated:
- Adequate protein intake
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin D
- Magnesium
- Zinc
- Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables
- Creatine
Among these, creatine has received increasing attention because of its important role in cellular energy production. While early findings are promising, larger clinical trials are still needed before it can be recommended as a standard treatment for concussion recovery.
Exercise – Rest Is No Longer the Only Recommendation
Years ago, complete physical and cognitive rest in a dark room was considered the standard treatment for concussion.
Today, scientific evidence supports a different approach.
Current international guidelines recommend:
- Relative rest for the first 24–48 hours.
- Gradual return to light physical activity below the symptom threshold.
